Tanah Inaq Foundation

Why Tanah Inaq?

In North of Lombok, women and girls especially are facing many challenges. Underaged marriages are frequent, and these unions celebrated based on customs are not recognized by law, leaving the children without protection nor legal documents (birth certificates), depriving them of their basic rights. These children are particularly vulnerable in case of separation of their parents, which often occurs after the firstborn. Domestic violence, poverty, lack of access to education are other challenges faced by women and girls.
Various supports have been provided so far on a case-by-case basis. But the time has come to dedicate a specific initiative to help vulnerable groups such as victims of domestic violence, underaged married girls left without support, pregnancy of unmarried girls, isolated handicapped or elderly persons…
For this purpose, the TANAH INAQ Foundation or Women’s Land Foundation was set-up.

Tanah Inaq Missions

  • Empower and protect women and children

  • Provide temporary housing for women and children experiencing violence or whose basic rights are threatened

  • Develop natural/organic agriculture, process agricultural products, and facilitate marketing

  • Organize farmers engaged in natural/organic agriculture for their welfare

  • Offer education and training related to natural/organic farming, healthy food and food processing, crafts, the environment, waste management, and other fields that support well-being

  • Create materials supporting the above activities, including publishing books for children.

A piece of land is allocated to the Foundation to be used to build simple bamboo housing, shared kitchen and develop vegetable gardens, to provide accommodation to women and girls in need of temporary shelter.

Tanah Inaq Activities

A sponsorship program for orphans and abandoned children
Based on data collected in cooperation with the Women and Children Protection Agency and the Civil Registry Office, this one-to-one sponsorship program supports marginalized children and young people up to 18 years old, providing them monthly allowance for scholarship and their basic needs (including health).
Monthly allowance is IDR 400,000 (USD 25.00) for primary school children, IDR 500,000 (USD 32.00) for junior high school children, and IDR 600,000 (USD 38.00) for senior high school children.
Currently we are supporting 18 children, but we are looking for new sponsors for 13 children already identified.

Legal assistance
Children born from underaged marriages cannot get birth certificates, as their parents do not have a wedding certificate. Tanah Inaq helps address the legal consequences for children born from illegal unions and help get legal documents for the children of unregistered marriages. This is important to provide them with a legal recognition which enables them to access governmental social programs.

Kids and youth activities
Preschool activities for very young kids: use local and natural material to stimulate creativity, develop motricity and various senses.
After school activities for children: art to develop creativity and sport. These activities are combined with underaged marriage prevention for teenagers.
Open a literacy space and promote children's books about Indonesia and about self-development for children.

Learning center for women and young people
Learning centre for mothers to develop their economic capacities: mobilize local knowledge and skills related to gardens and cashew nuts/fruits processing, traditional weaving, basket-work, and barista training, from bean selection to processing for teenagers and mothers.

Shelters and safe space
Build shelters to accommodate women and children in emergency situations, and an open space for training, a shared kitchen and bathroom on the land dedicated to Tanah Inaq.
A farming land is developed as well as a production area: with agroforestry, trees, kitchen garden, market garden, small animals, eggs production.
Women accommodated on Tanah Inaq land will learn about natural farming, produce for their own consumption and generate revenue for themselves.

Documentation work
Revive traditional games, songs, stories: involve young people in documenting traditional practices, local wisdom, games, songs, stories… that can be integrated in the after-school activities for children.
Document Lombok traditional plants and their usages (cosmetic, medicinal, culinary…). Develop visual material (photos, pictures) for easy-to-use information for education and conservation purposes.
