Primary School SDN 4

ANYAR, BAYAN

Ahwan, our dear friend and teacher at SDN4 Primary School, told us that many children begin their day on an empty stomach. It was distressing to learn that approximately 70% of the 108 students don't eat before coming to school.
What began as a conversation blossomed into a concrete plan: Let’s grow food at the school! We knew we wouldn’t be able to feed all students everyday, but let’s start small.
Together with the teachers and the students, we achieved to make a productive garden with minimal costs, using material that was available around. We brought some compost from the farm as well as seedlings to kickstart the project.
As the vegetables grew, it became time to harvest.Friends and family members heard about the project and wanted to contribute as well. We managed to purchase and donate 108 food containers and cutlery as well as 108 reusable bottles for all the kids.

Now once a week, the kids harvest. The vegetables are directly utilized at the school, where they are cooked by the teachers and some volunteers and then served to the children. This direct connection between the garden and the kitchen not only ensures freshness and quality but also promotes healthy eating habits among the students.
